The plot revolves around the card game Duel Masters, which is based on five civilizations: Fire, Water, Light, Darkness, and Nature. The original plot follows Shobu Kirifuda, a young boy who enjoys playing Duel Masters. In his duels, he and a few other duelists are known to bring the monsters on the cards to life. Shobu plays this card game in order to be the best duelist like his father.
